January 1, the New Year’s Day is a National Holiday for the Americans and is a time when they visit their friends and family, feast and watch parades and football. It’s customary in most places to have the traditional foods on New Year. The conventional New Year meal in the United States includes the black-eyed peas, greens, rice and hog jowls (the cheek of the hog, usually cut up into cubes before being smoked, something similar to bacon). Do you know that it means good luck to have black-eyed peas on New Year ? The peas stand for dollars to be gained in the year ahead ! So, are you counting the peas already ? ;-)
New Year is the perfect time to be with your family members precisely because it feels great to get into a new beginning with your kins. Now, if you want to have a big family bang on New Year, pack some fun games and activities in your agenda. To start with, you can lay your hands on preparing the New Year cake and follow it up with the desserts, and the ale, cocktails and juices. But don’t forget to keep the champagne handy ! Well, how would you raise a toast otherwise ? And it’s fun working together too ! But if you want that peace of mind while you explore your culinary skills, the best you can do is keep those little tornados at bay. Either keep them busy making some groovy masks or you declare a prize for whoever pops up the biggest balloon. And see how things get in a perfect apple-pie order !
To make your New Year family affair even more interesting, you can also plug into making what is known as the ‘fortune tree’. It’s fun in the sense that you get that spirited kick as you start plucking those coveted ‘fortunes’ hanging on the tree. Fortunes are nothing but little tokens—objects or may be just a piece of paper with a wish on it—that are hung from the Christmas tree with ribbons and strings. Anyone can tie a fortune to the tree for anyone they please and it’s loads of thrill to uncover what fortune’s dished out to whom. This is quite a fave among families and always a great idea to check it out for yourself just about how fortunate you are !
