Celebrate
to Make News:
Sometimes,
International Women’s Day celebrations hit the headlines
for the magnitude of the event it witness. For instance, in
Bogota, in 2002, a six-hour curfew was imposed on the male
population to enable women to attend events. The Romanian
government offered jobs to 20,000 unemployed women.
In
Bangladesh, a male-only march through the Capital was taken
out to protest on acid attacks against women. The plight of
Afghan women was taken up on International Women's Day.
In Russia, International Women's Day is one of the
country’s biggest holidays, and every year women are given
flowers and chocolate and glowing television tributes on TV.
Celebrate
Your Way:
There
isn’t any rigid laid-down rule or guideline for
International Women’s Day celebrations. You can celebrate
it your own way, given you recognize the achievements of
women worldwide through the years. Here’s to enlist a few
ways you can celebrate this March 8:
- Celebrate
International Women's Day in your workplace (if it’s
not a holiday) by honoring women who have made
contributions to your company.
- Your
club or organization could meet over lunch to celebrate,
or have a workshop with some theme concerning women.
- Celebrate
the contributions of American women to American life.
- Put
together a display at your local community center.
- Do
something for one underprivileged woman near you.
- Honor
your mom or sis, aunt or grandma by doing something
special for them.
- Is
there one (or more) woman who you admire for her work
and courage? Have a surprise party for her.
- Find
an International Women's Day event near you that you can
attend.
International
Women's Day is a day for women, so get involved. If you've
never taken part in International Women's Day activities,
then make this year your first—share the celebration of
women's achievements throughout the world this March 8 on
International Women's Day.
Host a
Women's Day dinner:
Invite your friends to a potluck dinner on March 8 to
celebrate International Women's Day. Let the theme be
“Celebrating Women”. Each of them could bring the name
and story of one woman they admire. This could be anyone
from Oprah to your own grandma.
Have a
Peace March:
In many towns and cities in North America, women, men, and
children take to the streets with candles and flashlights in
the darkness. "We will take back the night !" they
sing. This march is in defiance of the safety that is still
lacking for women on the streets and in homes. If your
community doesn't have a march, start one ! International
Women's Day on March 8 will be the best day to do it !
Church
Activities:
In many churches in North America, International Women's Day
is combined with Ecumenical Decade Sunday, usually the first
Sunday in March. On March 8, they celebrate the women in the
church today, and their mothers and grandmothers. They also
take time to remember the many biblical women, whose names
are seldom mentioned on Sunday mornings.
Knowledge
is Power:
You can even borrow books from your library, community
center, or from friends, and check your library for videos
about women in the world today. Focus on a topic that
concerns you—women and poverty, women and violence, or
women and war. On March 8, have a discussion with friends
over tea or dinner on one of these issues. As a special
token of International Women's Day, each one could bring one
small gift for an underprivileged woman at a shelter or
elsewhere.
Have a
fundraiser:
This is also a good idea to have a fundraiser on
International Women’s Day. So you can get your girl
friends together and organize a fundraiser in your
neighborhood or community. Donate the proceeds to an
organization concerned with social rights or women’s
issues on International Women's Day.
At your
Workplace:
If International Women's Day isn’t a holiday where
you’re located, you can celebrate it at your workplace.
Honor the women who have made contributions to your company
and get all the women in your office out for a
women’s-only lunch. You can also take a couple of hours
off for an activity commemorating International Women's Day,
that you all could take part in.
Your
local club:
If you belong to a club, get the ladies to meet on March 8
to celebrate or have a workshop, or do something to promote
women’s equality in society.
At Home:
Your mom, grandma, aunt or sis needs to be wished . Do
something special for them on International Women's Day.
Surprise
Someone you know:
Is there a woman you admire for her courage and work ?

her efforts. If it’s someone very close, you can also give
her a surprise party !International Women's Day is now a
global phenomenon ! And a fact worth taking pride in,
whether you ARE a woman or NOT!
So
just join in and celebrate !
