Holi - Traditional Food

If you have a sweet tooth, you're in for a royal treat ! On the Indian scene, the word 'Festival' itself will conjure up images of a mouth-watering colorful array of delicacies, and naturally, the festival of Holi brings platter-loads of sweets and savories.

Sweets: These yummies are the traditional ubiquitous mainstay of all festivals and occasions, and all homes will be filled with the heady aroma of sweets being freshly prepared. From the irresistible 'Jalebi's to the variety of 'Laddoo's, there will be sweets, sweets and sweets everywhere you go.

Savories: These finger licking, can't say no treats are the favorites of all during this colorful festival. Whether they are samosas or pakoras, kebabs or kachoris, you can't refuse any nor can you turn from the delicious hot, sweet and tangy chutneys and toppings that they are served with.

Traditional fare across the country:
In the Northern states, 'Gujias' are commonly prepared every time a festival comes around, Holi being no exception. The stuffing of 'khoya' and nuts can get your mouth really watering. 'Batashas' and 'Jalebis' are also freely distributed on this occasion.

For a traditional fare in Western Indian states, 'puran poli' , gur poli' and 'sakhar poli' are prepared for the festival of Holi. These are the favorites and are stuffed breads that make use of the freshly harvested jaggery and sugar.

In the Southern Indian states, rice being a diet staple, sweets are traditionally prepared using rice. 'Mysorepak', 'halwas' and 'kesari' are among the favorites and are traditionally served on banana leaves in a colorful eye-catching array.

'Vadas' are also common, and there are all sorts of them. 'Dahi vadas' are made with soaked and ground gram daal, 'bhang' vadas include the ingredient 'bhang', and 'papri chat', all served with chilled curd and topped with a special mix of spices, chutneys, chopped dry fruits and fresh mint and coriander leaves.

All over the country though, 'sherbets' of all sorts are the common beverages served during the joyous festival of Holi.

'Bhang':
Last but not the least, the very word 'Holi' conjures up images of that milky white cool drink laced with a narcotic derived from the dried leaves and seed capsules of the Cannabis, commonly called 'bhang', and drunk during the wild song-dance sessions of the colorful mornings, its effect just as intoxicating as the frenzied beat of the Holi drums. It will also be an ingredient in the 'bhang laddoos' that you might see quite a lot. Just be a little careful when the youngsters are around-for, 'bhang', in any form, is certainly not meant for them !
