Holi-The
Holi History
Yet another legend holds-this day of Holi, Lord Krishna is said to have vanquished "Putna" (the she-demon), who was sent by the wicked king Kamsa to kill the infant Krishna. The deceasing of "Putna" also signifies the end of the winter season, not to mention all things 'bad' and 'unpleasant' from this world.
The festive mood takes over everyone and preparations start almost as early as 40 days in advance. On the eve of "Holi", bonfires are burnt with all people, young and old, rejoicing and chanting religious 'mantras' from the Rigveda to do away with the evil spirits. There is a very popular belief that the fire devours all Evil and the Good sustains. The people worship Lord Krishna and pay their respect to Agni (fire). This festival of fun and frolic continues for almost 5 days. Everyone gets into the mood of celebrating this festival in a very lively manner. It's a time when friends and relatives get together. Red, blue, yellow, orange, or any other color that you can think of, are smothered on each other, songs are sung, and the whole atmosphere is filled with the warmth of love for each other. But nevertheless, its main significance is that it marks the demolition of the Evil and the sustenance of the Good.
Historically speaking, this day also observes the birthday of Shri Krishna Chaitanya, the famous spiritual preacher and an incarnation of the Divine on earth.
